RELEASE: Prominent National Security Leaders Support Graham
Wednesday, June 4th, 2014

COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA – U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham today announced the support of several prominent national security leaders for his record of supporting our military, providing our troops with the equipment and support they need, and advocating for Ronald Reagan’s ‘Peace through Strength’ foreign policy.

“Senator Graham knows what it takes to keep America, and our allies, safe,” said John Bolton, former U.N. Ambassador under President George W. Bush and current Fox News contributor. “He is one of the strongest advocates for Israel in the Senate and has been relentless in his efforts to hold President Obama accountable for what happened in Benghazi.  When it comes to keeping America strong and safe, Senator Graham is an invaluable voice for American leadership in the Senate.”

“Lindsey Graham is one of the most informed people I’ve ever known in the Senate,” said former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who campaigned for Graham last month in Greenville. “I have seen him be effective on almost every foreign policy issue of the day.  He takes the time to do his homework. He’s an outstanding legislator, and he’s able to bring people together to actually get legislation done.”

In a recent campaign ad, former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates credited Graham’s efforts to make sure our troops have the best equipment: “MRAPs saved thousands of lives and limbs thanks in no small part to Senator Graham’s support.”  Last year, Gates gave the maximum financial contribution to Graham’s primary campaign.

“This is the national security ‘Peace through Strength Dream Team,’” said Graham.  “They have a clear-eyed view of the dangers and opportunities that America faces around the world.  They understand the importance of a straight-forward, decisive foreign policy supported by the finest military in the world.  I am honored to be supported by a team that crafted America’s foreign policy and national security policy for three Republican Administrations and had such a historic impact on the world.”

List of national security leaders supporting Graham:

  • George P. Schultz, former Secretary of State under President Ronald Reagan, hosted an event and contributed to Graham’s campaign,
  • Henry Kissinger, former Secretary of State under Presidents Nixon and Ford, and Nobel Prize winner, co-hosted an event and contributed to Graham’s campaign,
  • Condoleezza Rice, former Secretary of State under President George W. Bush, campaigned for Graham last month in Greenville,
  • Robert M. Gates, former Secretary of Defense under President George W. Bush, contributed to Graham’s campaign,
  • John Bolton, former Ambassador to the United Nations under President George W. Bush, announced his support this week.

Additionally, President George W. Bush made a rare political donation to Graham’s campaign last year.

Last week, Graham announced a National Security Coalition comprised of military and national security leaders from across South Carolina.  The campaign also released new TV and radio ads highlighting his record of standing up for our men and women in uniform. The new ads focus specifically on Graham’s efforts to provide life-saving Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles for our troops and feature Cpl. Nate Moore, USMC (Ret.) of Greenville who survived an attack in Afghanistan while in an MRAP (Click here to watch the ad).
